Treasured Possession

Sometimes, I wonder, of all the seven billion people in the planet, why would God take notice of an imperfect and selfish person like me?

I wonder why? Till I’m again reminded of who I am in God’s eyes when I read Deuteronomy 7:6-8.

6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.7 The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.  8 But it was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your forefathers that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.  9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.

As valuable is this treasure chest to people, so are we in God’s eyes

This text was originally written for Israel, God’s chosen nation, whose people though were stubborn so many times in its history.

Yet, in her stubbornness, the Lord chose to love her in keeping with His promise to Israel’s forefathers – Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

The Lord loved Israel so much that He called the people His treasured possession!

But now, just as the Lord chose the stubborn nation of Israel to be His treasured possession, so am I (and so are you)!

In Christ, we are His treasured possession!

God chose to love us not because of our own good deedsbut He chose to love us out of His abounding goodness and grace.

Now here’s our response as God’s treasured or special possession: 1 Peter 2:9 says, But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
