Sonny Thoss, Alaska Excited To Play In Semis In Post-Tim Cone Era

Sonny Thoss says he’s excited with Alaska’s semifinal series encounter with top seed Talk ‘N Text in the PBA Philippine Cup.

The Aces play the Tropang Texters on Wednesday (Dec. 19) in Game One of their best-of-seven semifinals series at the Big Dome.

He expects a lot of banging and physical plays against Talk ‘N Text’s army of big men like Ali Peek, Ranidel de Ocampo, Kelly Williams and Harvey Carey.

Since the Tropang Texters have been a regular fixture in the PBA Finals for the past three years, Thoss said it’s a given that Talk ‘N Text’s confidence is at a high, more so with multi-titled PBA coach Norman Black now calling the shots.

“They (Tropang Texters) are tough and their confidence is up.  They have been in the finals for the many years already,” Thoss said after Alaska swept Meralco, 2-0 in their short quarterfinals series on Saturday.

The 6’7″ Thoss said facing Talk ‘N Text in a race-to-four-wins series is beneficial for him because it helps him grow further as an athlete.

“But it’s good to play against them. You learn more and you get better as an idnvidual. I know it’s not gonna be easy, but our guys are ready to go,” he added.

The James Cook University alumnus said seeing Alaska’s huge leap this conference was quite a surprise, considering that the Aces only won a total of 11 games last season.

thoss“Of course, I’m really happy and the guys are really pumped up again to be back in the playoffs,” said the 31-year-old Thoss, whose team also got a huge boost with the addition of energetic rookie Calvin Abueva.

Now, the Aces have a chance to make it to the PBA Finals for the first time in the post-Tim Cone era. Cone led Alaska to 13 PBA titles before leaving the Uytengsu franchise prior to the start of the 2012 season to join the San Miguel Corporation-owned B-Meg (now San Mig Coffee).

Under the 37-year-old new coach Luigi Trillo, the Aces finished fifth in the elimination round with an 8-6 record, then swept Meralco, 2-0 in the quarterfinals to reach the semis.

Will the Aces make it all the way to the PBA Finals? What do you think?
