Rain or Shine Aims To Regain Momentum; San Mig Hopes To Sustain Momentum

Coach Tim Cone did a fantastic job preparing San Mig Coffee in Game Two. The result was a revitalized James Yap and an aggressive Mixers five that overwhelmed Rain or Shine in Game Two, 106-82 Friday night at the MOA Arena.

With the series leveled at one apiece, Game Three would be a battle to regain momentum for Rain or Shine.

san-mig-vs-rain-or-shine-december-19The Elasto Painters of coach Yeng Guiao kicked off their PBA Philippine Cup semifinals best-of-seven series on a high note, a 91-83 win against a listless Mixers at the Big Dome.

Somehow, the Rain or Shine mentor admitted they lost their focus in Game Two when they got frustrated by the referees’ calls as well as their inability to shoot well from the field, contributing to the team’s most lopsided loss under Guiao’s watch.

But knowing Guiao, who has been coaching the pro league since 1990 beginning with Pop Cola, Rain or Shine could surely bounce back and come up with another strong showing against the taller San Mig squad.

Yap got away with 34 points, 16 in the critical third quarter San  Mig salvo that turned the game into a one-sided win.

But for sure, the Elasto Painters will be making the necessary defensive adjustments to make sure Yap won’t be able to hit those three-point bombs the way he did in Game Two. The 6’2″ Yap connected seven triples during his explosive Game Two performance.

“We expect Game Three to be closer,” said Guiao. “We will make the defensive adjustments.”
