What James Yap & San Mig Need To Do In The Series

Watching his team get hammered in Game 4 was like adding up another injury to walking-wounded James Yap (right knee) following San Mig Coffee’s 72-98 Christmas Day defeat at the hands of a gritty Rain or Shine squad Tuesday night at the MOA Arena.

Yap had been playing through a bum knee, which he suffered late in the series-opener that also saw the Mixers drop an 83-91 decision.

“Basta lalaro ko lang. Importante sa amin itong series,” said Yap, who scored just six points as he struggled against Rain or Shine’s physical defense.

The former UE Red Warrior shooting star was coming off a 34-point performance in Game 2, which saw him lead the Mixers to an easy 106-82 whipping of the Elasto Painters last week.

But now that Rain or Shine has regained the upper hand of the series with its 2-1 best-of-seven semifinals lead, Yap is confident they can rise from their worst defeat this conference.

However, it will take more than just another explosive performance from Yap to prevent Rain or Shine from making it a 3-1 lead come Thursday.

PJ Simon, Yap’s scoring partner, said the Mixers will have to match or even exceed the Elasto Painters’ aggressiveness if they wish to forge another series deadlock.

Overall, the Mixers will have to keep their focus on the series and not be distracted by “bum officiating”, which Yap and fellow stars Marc Pingris and Simon said contributed to their Game 3 downfall.

Will the Mixers return to Game 4 mentally tougher?
