No Rest For Gilas-Pilipinas Coach Chot Reyes

I asked Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes if he’s got some sleep already since steering the national squad to the 19th Super Kung Sheung Cup title in Wan Chai, Hong Kong on Sunday night.

His swift response was, “wala pa, sa August 12 na ako magpapahinga.”

August 12. That marks the end of the Fiba-Asia men’s championships, which is scheduled from August 1-11 this year, and which the country is hosting for the first time in 40 years.

Gilas with Chot -Dubai 2012And Reyes hopes that by August 12, the Gilas Pilipinas team would be celebrating for winning the Fiba-Asia crown, or at least, are happy to make it to the top 3. That’s because the top three finishers in the Fiba-Asia men’s championships will earn berths in the 2014 World basketball championships in Spain.

But the multi-titled PBA coach-turned-national-coach explained that the task of winning the Asian championship is a gargantuan task.

China, South Korea and Japan, along with some of the Middle East countries loom as the biggest road blocks to the Philippines’ quest for the Asian championship.

“Speed and outside shooting, these are just the two things we need. But it (the team) has to be very versatile. It’s going to be a team that will have role players,” said Reyes after his meeting with PBA commissioner Chito Salud.

“Magbubuo tayo ng team.  This is not gonna be a collection of superstars. And kasama ang mga cadet since they are part of the long term program of the SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas),” he added.

With thousands of fans expected to cheer for the Gilas-Pilipinas squad at the MOA Arena, site of the Fiba-Asia championships, it will only be fitting for every Filipino to rally behind our national team which is bidding to turn what has only been a dream into a reality.

  1. Ganyan lang talaga, kailangan Lang lag sakripisyo. Coach Chot is doing his best to help our country regain its once high billing in Asia. And it’s just proper for every top baller in the country and team owner from the PBA to chip in a this point.
