Meralco Bolts And Constant Change

In a sport like basketball, change is constant.

Injuries happen unannounced. Trades get sealed by higher management and players suddenly switch teams. Coaches get fired and replaced by a newbie, a long-time assistant or a veteran coach with solid credentials.

No matter what, change is constant.

Meralco pulled off a shocking 99-92 upset win against powerhouse Talk 'N Text on Saturday behind super import Eric Dawson.

Just like Meralco’s “constant change” in lineup, we all have to ready for the changes we will have to face in life.

Just like what Ryan Gregorio is dealing with at the moment with his team, the Meralco Bolts.

Since he took over as the franchise’s coach when the team bought the Sta. Lucia Realty club at the start of the 2010 PBA season, the Bolts have gone through a series of player movements as Gregorio and management believe it’s the primary way to upgrade their roster and make it competitive.

Now on its fourth season, Gregorio said they are tired of just being a middle-tier team. Thus, another surprise move by the Bolts a week before the PBA Commissioner’s Cup started when they traded top playmaker Solomon Mercado along with rookie big man Kelly Nabong to Globalport in exchange for several role players in a bid to “bolster” the team’s roster.

In the post-Mercado era, the Bolts are at the middle of the pack with their 2-3 record. Not bad for a team that didn’t have much time to jell together with new players from the two-team trade.

Gregorio said he’s now used to change, and given the “light” schedule of the Bolts, where they will only two games for the next 12 days (from now, March 1 till March 13), the youthful-looking mentor said he hopes to reinforce his system to Meralco as the team makes one big push for the playoffs.

Some people hate change. Some would prefer to maintain a specific habit, lifestyle or way of doing things.

But at times, we just have to be opened to change. For when we stick with the status quo, chances are, we’ll end up getting fossilized.

Change is constant. Let’s be ready.
